The town of Magaliesburg in Gauteng has a long history of being a peaceful weekend getaway, a shelter for artists, and a treasure trove of legacy in the shape of the Cradle of Humankind. However, by 2012, Magalies, like so many other small towns in South Africa, had fallen into a state of falling economic growth and rising neglect.
In November of that year, the soon-to-be-founded Ranyaka team, in collaboration with a group of community members, launched the Magalies Development Initiative (MDI), recognizing the town’s enormous potential.
